Publishing

In many ways, writing a book is easier than getting it published. A writer has total control while crafting a work; from their hands to the reader contains entails navigating many steps that cumulatively take away control from the writer and ceding it to others.

To make this process less painful, I founded Shawmut Peninsula Press.

Shawmut Peninsula Press

Working to get my first books published was difficult at times. For example, one editor had a tremendous problem with quoting architects (he thought they lacked credentials and relevant authority unless they had a PhD), a major issue when the book was focused on architecture.

At the same time, there is the problem of mainstream publishers lack of Latinx writers. Despite making up twenty percent of the US population, only a small fraction of big publishing house writers were Latinx. To address these and other issues, I founded Shawmut Peninsula Press.

The name honors the indigenous people who lived in what is now Boston before the coming of Europeans. A Boston-based press is also in the strong tradition of Boston publishing. WE have a long tradition of independent publishing. SPP fits into that history.
